I’ve been finding moments to get back into my studio over the past week or so, to create two new works to submit to a group show. While working on repetitive elements for my pieces I like to watch Art:21 videos. I find it so inspiring and somehow affirming to watch the artists in these videos in their studios. Each person has such an individual way of working. Watching the video on Boundaries I learned, for the first time, about the Montreal-born artist David Altmejd. I was really taken with his incredible sculptures and installations. It was fascinating to see him working in his studio - I am particularly fond of a sequence in which he somewhat haphazardly casts his own ear. The following are statements he makes about his own practice, that I can very much relate to:
“I don’t need to make sketches of sculptures I make because I don’t think there’s a big difference between putting ink on a piece of paper and gluing little pieces of crystal on plexiglass in space.”
“Ninety-five percent of the relationship I have to my work is through process. It’s not as a distant object. It’s a made object. I like the idea of trusting the work, trusting the material, and trusting that every little step is going to dictate the next one.”
